Injured teen dies from earlier crash

RANDALL — Seventeen-year-old Charles Mellema died Saturday from injuries he sustained in a crash shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Sixth Street and Superior Avenue.

Chief Charles Strack of the Randall Police Department received a report of the accident with injuries. Upon arrival, first responders observed two vehicles in the ditch. One of the vehicles had a power pole on top of it. The driver of that vehicle, Mellema, was injured and pinned in the car. The driver of the other vehicle, 54-year-old Helen Pfeffer, was also injured.

Pfeffer was driving west on West 6th Street approaching the intersection of Superior Avenue, and Mellema was driving north on Superior Avenue, the Randall Police Department report stated. It appeared Mellema failed to stop for the stop sign and entered the intersection in front of Pfeffer’s vehicle when they collided, according to the report.

Mellema was taken by ambulance to St. Gabriel’s Hospital and then airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital.

Pfeffer was driven by private party to St. Gabriel’s Hospital for treatment of her injuries. She was later released from St. Gabriel’s.

Randall Police Department was assisted by Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, Randall First Response, Randall Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance.
