Brainerd chamber spoof touts "ice logging" operation
Weary of a long winter and anticipating the May 10 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener, Brainerd Lakes Chamber officials issued an April Fools’ news release proclaiming that it would begin ice logging operations this week on Gull Lake.
The mock news release stated: “Beginning with Hole-in-the-Day Bay near Grand View Lodge, the lake ice will be “logged” by using ice augers and chainsaws to cut 8-foot by 10-foot sections of ice that will then be pulled out of the lake by oxen, the eighth generation of Babe the Blue Ox descendants used for ice-out operations.”
Kathi Nagorski Leary, Brainerd Lakes Chamber communications director, said the news release was designed to express the public’s yearning for warmer weather and to promote the fishing opener.
“The event will go on regardless of the ice conditions,” Leary said Tuesday. “We’re certainly hopeful the ice will be out. We know the river will be open.”
She said alternative fishing locations will be used if the ice isn’t out and a celebration at Cuyuna Country Recreation area, shooting events in Baxter, a free community picnic in downtown Nisswa and a performance by the Gear Daddies will go on as planned.
“We’re hoping for warmer days ahead,” Leary said.
The news release went on to quote Frank Soukup, Grand View Lodge director of marketing and co-chair of the 2014 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener that the community doesn’t want to leave it to chance that the ice will be out in time for the opener. The news release described a fictitious scheme in which water will first be pumped from Gull Lake, warmed through Grand View Lodge’s pool, then sprayed back into Gull Lake.
The chamber statement concluded by wishing everyone a happy April Fools’ Day.
This year’s events will be May 8-11, hosted by the Brainerd Lakes Chamber and Grand View Lodge in collaboration with the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce.
