■ Old Wadena

Society meets April 6

VERNDALE — The annual meeting of the Old Wadena Society is 1 p.m. on April 6 at the Bull’s Eye Restaurant in Verndale. The meeting is open to the public. The program for the annual meeting is “Underwater Treasurers” with Bill Matthies of Brainerd presenting the program.

Matthies, owner of the Minnesota School of Diving, presents “Underwater Discoveries.” With more than 50 years of professional diving experience, Matthies will show slides and discuss the wide variety of discoveries and interesting articles he has encountered in area lakes and rivers during his career.

The meeting is free to the public. While the meeting officially begins at 1 p.m., attendees are encouraged to come early for the buffet or order off the menu.

Other business at the annual meeting will include election of members of the Old Wadena Society board of directors and discussion of future events, including dedication on May 17, of the recently completed 500 foot-plus bog walk at Old Wadena, and plans for this year’s Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folk Music Festival August 8, 9 and 10.

The Old Wadena Society is a 24-year old organization which annually produces the Old Wadena Rendezvous and promotes the use and preservation of the Old Wadena Park, located approximately seven miles northwest of Staples, situated on a small bluff overlooking the Crow Wing River. One of several parks making up the Crow Wing River Canoe Trail, Old Wadena is owned by Wadena County. With the assistance of the Wadena County Board, the OWS has, over the past several years, overseen the placement of a new foot bridge crossing the Partridge River in the park, conducted several archaeological “digs” in or near the park, financed improved signs around the park and built the bog walk. Along with many other projects, the group has successfully staged the annual rendezvous for the past 23 years.
