Brainerd council approves improvements for Garfield School area streets

Brainerd City Council members Monday approved plans for improvements around Garfield Elementary School.

The Garfield project consists of street removals, reconstruction of a water main and services below 10th Avenue and L Street, reconstruction of the sanitary sewer systems liner beneath the alley between Ninth and 10th avenues from I Street to L Street and beneath the alley between 10th and 11th avenues from I Street to mid-block between J Street and L Street.

Brainerd staff reported the project is needed because of the condition of both the underground utilities and the streets.

Total cost is estimated to be $764,204.

Of the $355,553 in street reconstruction costs, the city estimates about $130,000 would be assessed against benefitting properties.

With the Garfield Project, reconstruction would include:

• 10th Avenue Northeast from J Street to L Street.

• 11th Avenue Northeast from J Street to L Street.

• J Street Northeast from 10th Avenue to 11th Avenue. • L Street Northeast from 10th Avenue to 11th Avenue.
