Area students place in state speech tournament

Several area students have placed in the 2014 Minnesota State High School League Class A State Speech Tournament.

There were 96 Class A teams represented at the tournament, conducted at Blaine High School on Saturday. There were 187 Class A teams that competed in speech statewide this year.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (WHA) still tops the Class A list with 40 state champions between 1969 and 2014, which is good for a third-place tie on the list of Most State Champions-All Classes.

WHA also still tops the list of top medal-winning Class A schools with 226.

Here is how area students placed in categories:

Discussion: Chloë Litts, Staples-Motley, second place.

Extemporaneous speaking: Bradley Foster, WHA, sixth place; Spencer Svendsen, Staples-Motley, seventh place.

Humorous interpretation: Matthew Koring, WHA, second place.

Informative speaking: Hailey Bruns, WHA, sixth place.

Original oratory: Sarah Anderson, WHA, third place.

Serious interpretation-poetry: Grace Steward, WHA, second place.
