Fifty Lakes man accidently shoots himself

FIFTY LAKES — A 61-year-old Fifty Lakes man was injured Friday after accidently discharging his firearm and wounding himself, reported the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched at 5:17 p.m. to the Fifty Lakes residence for a report of a prowler. The man indicated that there may have been an intruder in the basement of the residence. Upon arrival, the responding officers found the man inside the home with a gunshot wound to his abdomen area.

County Wing County Sheriff Chief Deputy Dennis Lasher said the man thought he heard something in his basement, so he went downstairs with a firearm to investigate. Lasher said the man, who was home alone, was not sure how he discharged his firearm.

The man was treated on scene and later flown by North Memorial Air Care to the St. Cloud hospital. The man’s current medical condition was unknown Monday.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing the name or address of the gunshot victim. Lasher said the sheriff’s office wants to make sure all the family members are notified first. Lasher anticipated the name would be released Tuesday.

Lasher said law enforcement officials were unable to locate any signs of a prowler.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Crosslake Police Department, Breezy Point Police Department and North Ambulance Service.
