WADENA — A 16-year-old Wadena teen was killed Monday when the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) she was driving rolled onto its side, the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff’s office received a call at 6:28 p.m., of an ATV rollover accident at the intersection of Apache Avenue and Cree Street in Wadena Township. When officers and emergency personnel arrived, they found a Polaris Ranger that rolled onto its side.

The driver, Christine Kaye Alberts, had severe head trauma and was transported to Tri County Hospital by ambulance where she later died as a result of her injuries. The other occupant of the ATV was a 15-year-old girl from Wadena who was transported to Tri County and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Sheriff Michael D. Carr stated that the ATV was traveling southbound on Apache Avenue approximately 20 mph when the Alberts vehicle swerved toward the ditch, she then over-corrected the ATV, causing it to roll. Both girls were ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle came to a rest on its side on the roadway. Sheriff Carr advises neither the driver or passenger were wearing seatbelts or helmets.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office. The Verndale and Wadena police departments assisted Wadena at the scene.
