Trial for grandson in Willmar woman's killing set for July
Brainerd MN 506 James St. / PO Box 974 56401

WILLMAR - A jury trial for a Willmar teen charged with first-degree murder in his grandmother’s killing was scheduled Wednesday for July 21 to Aug. 8.

But where 18-year-old Robert Warwick’s trial will take place is yet to be determined, as District Judge David Mennis will consider a defense motion to move the trial from Kandiyohi County.

Mennis gave defense attorney Daniel Mohs until May 2 to collect the news media articles Mohs says constitute significant prejudicial pretrial publicity and write an argument to be considered by the judge. Prosecutor Matthew Frank has until May 9 to file a response.

Warwick was indicted on two first-degree murder charges in the July 29 killing of his grandmother, Lila Warwick, 79, at her home along the east edge of Willmar. He faces the possibility of life in prison and has been held on $2 million bail since September.

Warwick’s co-defendant, Brok Junkermeier, 19, was sentenced April 9 to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to first-degree premeditated murder. Junkermeier admitted he stabbed and strangled Lila Warwick after months of planning with Robert Warwick.

A third defendant, Devon Jenkins, 16, of Willmar, pleaded guilty in December to aiding and abetting second-degree murder and received a juvenile sentence.
