Ward named to conference committee for school health care coverage bill

Rep. John Ward, DFL – Baxter, this week was appointed to serve on the conference committee for HF 2180, legislation modifying school employee health care coverage. If the House and Senate versions of the bill are different, they go to a conference committee. The committee meets to work out differences in the two bills and to reach a compromise.

The bill seeks to stem increasing health care costs for schools by requiring all districts and charters to seek bids from multiple health insurance providers, including the Public Employees Insurance Plan (PEIP). The bill also institutes transparency measures for school board members, school district officials, and union representatives.

Ward said he was pleased to be appointed to the conference committee.

“I’ve worked on this issue for a number of years and it’s great to see it finally moving toward the finish line,” he said. “’I’ll be working hard with my colleagues in the House and Senate to find a compromise and get a final bill to be signed into law.”

The conference committee’s compromise bill then goes back to the House and the Senate for another vote. If both bodies pass the bill in this form, it is sent to the governor for his approval or disapproval. If one or both bodies reject the report, it goes back to the conference committee for further consideration.
