New snow lifts Duluth’s seasonal total to fourth highest on record

DULUTH - The National Weather Service in Duluth reported that the city had seen 3.4 inches of new snow as of 9 p.m. Thursday, raising the seasonal snowfall to 128.7 inches — fourth greatest on record for the city.

Additional snowfall later Thursday and early today may push the city even higher on its list of the snowiest winters.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for Carlton and southern St. Louis counties until midnight, with possible snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches.

To the northeast, a winter storm warning was in effect for Cook and Lake counties until noon today, with snowfall reaching 6 to 13 inches.

A winter weather advisory also was in effect until 7 a.m. today for the Iron Range, International Falls and Ely, where snowfall of 3 to 7 inches was expected.

Duluth’s snowiest winter was in 1995-96, when 135.4 inches fell, followed by 131.8 inches in 1949-50 and 129.4 inches last winter.
