Redby man arrested in stabbing of Beltrami County homeowner
BEMIDJI - A 23-year-old Redby man was arrested early Friday after a stabbing Thursday night in Grant Valley Township.
The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at 9:20 p.m. Thursday from a resident saying a man had just stabbed a homeowner, according to a release from Sheriff Phil Hodapp.
The release said Orland James Spears had asked the 71-year-old homeowner if he could use his telephone. The man let Spears call from outside his front door. After the call, the man closed the door, and Spears broke through the door, stabbed the man twice and fled, authorities said.
The victim was transported to Sanford Bemidji Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Friday.
After hours of searching, a county police dog lost the suspect’s scent in a heavily wooded area, the sheriff's office said.
Just after 5 a.m. Friday, authorities began receiving calls from residents reporting the suspect walking around nearby homes. Spears was arrested at a residence after a dog took him down, the release said.
The case will be presented to the Beltrami County Attorney's Office for possible serious assault and burglary charges.
