Prom attendees rent costumes, raise $500

Costumes for a Cause received $500 at the conclusion of the Brainerd High School prom — money spent by students who rented a variety of Great Gatsby-themed costumes. Many of the women’s costumes were made by Ruth Gmeinder. The East Gull Lake woman has made costumes that have been used at a variety of charity fundraisers. Gmeinder has accumulated several hundred costumes, all used for fund raising for charities.

The Costumes for a Cause money will be used to help build a women’s treatment facility with daycare. Plans are to focus on pregnant women to reduce the incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

A major fund drive for this project is scheduled to be conducted later this summer.
