Crews demolish arson fire damaged home in Brainerd

A home, severely damaged in an arson fire last August, was demolished Friday.

Hengel Construction took down the two-story home on South Sixth Street.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. As firefighters arrived heavy smoke and flames were coming out the first floor. A passerby raised the alarm just before 7 a.m. on a Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013. South Sixth Street was blocked off about six hours as firefighters worked on the fire. Fires in older homes without fire breaks tend to spread quickly. Between the home and its contents, the damage was estimated to be $70,000 to $80,000.

The state fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate the fire. A $2,500 reward was offered for information leading to the identification of the people responsible for the fire.
