Red Lake council member dies at 75

RED LAKE—Longtime Red Lake Tribal Council member Richard Barrett Sr. has died.

According to an announcement posted to the council's Facebook page on Monday afternoon, Feb. 12, Barrett, 75, is survived by his wife and other family members.

Barrett was first elected to the tribal council in 2002, following the death of his predecessor. He served the community as the Little Rock representative for 16 years.

Roman Stately Jr., who grew up with Barrett and represents the Red Lake district, described Barrett as a "gentleman."

"We've known each other for a long time, we were good friends through the years," Stately said. "Sure is going to be hard for me to go to a council meeting and not see him."

Stately said Tuesday's council meeting was postponed due to Barrett's death, and that the council will meet Feb. 20 instead.

Barrett had two years left of his term. Tribal Legal Adviser Michelle Paquin told Forum News Service via email that the council must pass a resolution to add Barrett's seat to the election notice.
