Minnesota woman drowns after ATV falls through ice
COHASSET, Minn. - A Cohasset woman died Saturday when the ATV she was riding fell through the ice on a rural Itasca County lake.
The body of Bernice Elaine Kane of Cohasset was recovered from the waters of Rice Lake, near Cohasset, on Sunday afternoon, the Itasca County Sheriff's Office reported; she is believed to have died from drowning.
The Sheriff's Office responded at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday to a report of an ATV falling through the ice; deputies discovered that two people had been on the ATV.
Michael Anthony Gibbons of Duluth was able to get out of the water on his own and call for help after the ATV broke through the ice.
The incident is under investigation by the Itasca County Sheriff's Office and Itasca County Medical Examiner's Office.
The Cohasset Fire Department, Meds-1 Ambulance, Itasca County Search and Rescue, Itasca County Dive Team and Life Link III helicopter assisted at the scene.
