Man's body recovered in BWCA after canoe capsizes

A 31-year-old Coon Rapids, Minn., man died after a canoe capsized in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness Saturday night, June 9, in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region.

The body of Joseph Bennett Fedick was recovered from the water at 3:34 p.m. Monday about 200 yards away from the Perent Lake campsite where he had been staying, according to a report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Fedick had been missing since about 11 p.m. Saturday, when the canoe he was paddling overturned. Neither he nor his paddling partner were wearing life jackets at the time. While Fedick never made it to shore, the other occupant of the canoe swam to a rock and called for help. He was rescued by another camper, according to witness accounts.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office learned of the missing canoeist at 3:41 p.m. Sunday.
