John Douglas Peterson of Palisade, Minn., was charged on Wednesday with one count of second-degree felony murder in State District Court in Aitkin. If convicted, Peterson faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

John Douglas Peterson, 33, was charged Wednesday in Aitkin County District Court with one count of second-degree felony murder and had his first appearance Thursday in front of Judge Earl Maus. Maus set Peterson's bail at $1 million without conditions and $250,000 with conditions. Conditions include Peterson cannot leave the state, cannot have any contact with the victims, must make all future court appearances and remain law-abiding.
