PEQUOT LAKES — Parents in the Pequot Lakes School District were notified through a mass voicemail message from Superintendent Rick Linnell Friday morning to be aware that a Level 3 predatory sex offender from Pine River has been hanging around Pequot Lakes.

Linnell asked parents to have a conversation with their children about safety when dealing with strangers. He also referred parents to the Department of Corrections website that led to information on Robert Arthur Litzau, 68, of rural Pine River, a Level 3 registered predatory offender.

Litzau has a history of sexual contact with adolescent males, ages 14-15 and he was known to his victims, according to the DOC website.

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch said Friday that Litzau is not wanted by the sheriff’s office. A community notification meeting was conducted last year in Pine River on Litzau when he moved to the area.

Burch said he has heard that Litzau has been frequenting certain areas but to his knowledge Litzau has not violated the criteria he must meet.

“We have to be very cautious that we do not harass him,” said Burch. “We’re doing everything we can to keep the community safe. If he’s violating statute, we’ll address it. To this point, he has not.”

Linnell said he was prompted to send out the taped message regarding the sex offender by numerous contacts with parents on the topic.

“I heard enough that I thought it was important,” Linnell said. “We just want people to be aware of what’s going on in the community so their kids are safe.”
