Motley man who shot his own foot charged with domestic assault

A 55-year-old Motley man was charged Monday with domestic assault by strangulation in Morrison County District Court.

The charge against Steven M. Johnson has a maximum penalty of three years of imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a domestic assault and a gunshot wound Friday in Motley. The victim, a family member of Johnson’s, said Johnson was in the garage and drinking heavily. He then came in the house and began yelling obscenities at the victim, who became tired of the name calling and slapped Johnson on the side of the head. Johnson retaliated by grabbing the victim on the neck with his hands and squeezing off her air supply. She was able to get away and another family member intervened. Shortly after, Johnson went into his garage and family members heard a gunshot.

Family members observed Johnson with a gun and a gunshot wound in the middle of his foot.

Johnson told officers that he shot his foot while playing with his gun. He was brought to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
