Man charged in baby's death
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A Pelican Rapids man is charged with manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 5-month-old son.
Thirty-year-old Pedro Mendoza remains in the Otter Tail County Jail. Unconditional bail is set at $300,000, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Mendoza should he be released.
Police were called Friday night to a home in Pelican Rapids and found the baby was not breathing. The infant was taken to a Fargo, N.D., hospital and died Saturday.
The Daily Journal of Fergus Falls (http://bit.ly/uCb4a3) reports Mendoza was watching the child while his mother was working at a turkey plant. Mendoza visited the plant and allegedly told his girlfriend that the baby had fallen off the bed and was not breathing.
Doctors told police that the child had skull fractures.
