Outside judge to hear Cook County courthouse shooting case

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — The trial for a man accused of shooting and wounding a Cook County prosecutor and witness this month will be heard by a Grand Rapids judge.

The shooting occurred Dec. 15 in the Cook County courthouse, which is in the 6th Judicial District. But to prevent a conflict of interest, the case will be heard by Judge Jon Maturi of the 9th Judicial District.

The charges against 42-year-old Daniel Sidney Schlienz include two counts of premeditated first-degree attempted murder.

The criminal complaint says after Schlienz was convicted in a sex case, he retrieved a gun from his vehicle and shot the prosecutor and a witness. A Duluth News Tribune report ( ) says both victims were hospitalized for five days.

Public defender James Austad didn't immediately return a message left Saturday.
