Akeley man arrested for arson

CHICKAMAW BEACH — A 22-year-old Akeley man was arrested Tuesday for his alleged involvement in a house fire Sunday in the Chickamaw Beach area, reported Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch.

Burch said there were several people in the house at the time of the fire that was reported in the early morning hours, but no one was injured. Sheriff deputies, Pine River Police officers and the Pine River and Pequot Lakes fire departments responded to the scene.

Burch said evidence at the scene led authorities to believe that foul play was involved in the house fire. Burch said the fire started at one end of the home, but he could not comment on any further details of the arson as the case is an active investigation.

Burch said the investigation by the sheriff’s office, Pine River Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office led to the arrest of the Akeley man, who remains in custody in Cass County Jail, pending formal charges in Cass County District Court.

Burch anticipated the man would have his arraignment in court Wednesday.
