The Lakes Area Drug Investigative Division (LADID) Monday investigated an alleged methamphetamine manufacturing lab at an apartment complex located at 420 South Seventh Street.

Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston said Brainerd police and firefighters responded to a report at 2:14 a.m. of a fire in an apartment complex, located behind the Brainerd Salvation Army.

McQuiston said in a news release that officers and firefighters arrived finding smoke in the main hallway area of the complex. As the building was evacuated, firefighters had to force open a door of an apartment where there was no response. No one was in the apartment, however a spent fire extinguisher was located as was the apparent origin of the fire. Examining the area of the fire, officers recognized several components used to manufacture methamphetamine.

McQuiston said the fire was contained to the one apartment unit.

McQuiston said at this point no one is in custody and the incident remains under investigation by LADID.

McQuiston said residents of the apartment complex of 10 units were evacuated and will not be allowed to return until the clean-up has been conducted and the building is cleared by health officials to be occupied again.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.
