WALKER — A 30-year-old man will serve more than nine years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree criminal sexual conduct, the Cass County Attorney’s Office reported.

Melvin Eugene Smith III was sentenced by Judge Jana Austad to 110 months in prison. According to the criminal complaint against Smith, he allegedly had sexually touched a young boy on multiple occasions in 2011 while he was taking care of the child in Remer.

Austad committed Smith to the Commissioner of Corrections immediately. Upon his release from prison, Smith will be subject to predatory offender registration and will be assigned a predatory offender risk level. He has been convicted of failing to register as a predatory offender on two prior occasions.
