Fire destroys vacant motel in Garrison
GARRISON—A vacant motel was destroyed by fire Wednesday, Sept. 5, just south of Garrison on the 8390 block of Highway 169.
Garrison Fire Chief Bruce Breun said the call came in at 10:20 a.m. and when he arrived on scene, one of the units of the motel was fully engulfed. Flames were coming out from the back of the roof and smoke was flowing out of both sides of the motel structure. There were 25 firefighters on scene for about six hours, including firefighters from Deerwood and Onamia.
"We stopped what we could," Breun said. "The two ends of the motel and office area, which served as a living quarters still stands.
"The cause of the fire is undetermined."
Breun said the motel was vacant for a few years. The motel had 10-12 units and was two stories.
The fire rekindled just after 6 p.m., and was extinguished.
