Capt. Scott Goddard of the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office outlasted his opponent Pat Pickar, a Crow Wing County sheriff's deputy, in Tuesday's Nov. 6 general election by more than 2,500 votes, or close to a 9 percent lead.

There are 64 precincts in Crow Wing County. Goddard won 39 precincts. Pickar won 24 precincts. They tied in one precinct.

Goddard received 16,477 total votes and Pickar received 13,818 votes, according to the unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State.

Goddard performed particularly well in the northern precincts of the county, including his hometown of Pequot Lakes, where his vote total was more than double Pickar's. The only precincts north of the city of Cuyuna won by Pickar were Rabbit Lake, Perry Lake and Ross Lake townships. Goddard also took all but one of Brainerd's and all three Unorganized Territory precincts, while Pickar, who resides in Baxter, took three of four precincts in that city.

Pickar found strength in the county's eastern cities and townships, winning Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood and Cuyuna, the latter of which Pickar serves as assistant police chief in addition to his sheriff's office duties. He also dominated in the southern precincts, earning the most votes in all but Crow Wing, Maple Grove and Bay Lake townships.

Current Sheriff Todd Dahl announced his retirement and will be done Dec. 31, and then Goddard will take office Jan. 1, 2019.
