Green and Independence parties meet

They may have been few in number but some of the supporters of Minnesota’s smaller parties demonstrated their convictions by driving long distances to meet with like-minded citizens. Independence Party convener Chuck Marohn said two of the five people at that caucus drove from Grand Rapids.

The Independence Party members in Baxter named delegates to the state convention but passed no resolutions. They were asked by the state party to vote on two straw polls.

They unanimously voted not to support the marriage amendment to the Minnesota Constitution that would prohibit same-sex marriage. The Independence Party caucus in the basement of the Blackridge Bank.

The Independence Party group split on a 3-2 “no” vote to the question “Do you favor any level of spending for public stadiums?”

The Green Party caucus, conducted Tuesday at the Brainerd Public Library, drew only two people.

Marcia Thurmer, who was selected as a delegate for the Green Party state convention in May in Rochester, said two resolutions were passed Tuesday: to require insurance companies to inform policy holders that it is in their best interest to ask for annual reproposals; and to ask that units of government to dispose of trees cut down for a project in an ecologically benign manner, preferably to be sold or gifted as firewood and not burned wastefully.
