■ Gazelka wins Senate

District 9 seat

Sen. Paul Gazelka, R-Cass County, defeated former Rep. Al Doty, DFL-Royalton, 53.7 percent to 46.30 percent in Tuesday’s election for the Senate District 9 seat. The vote totals were Gazelka, 20,255, and Doty, 17,505.

Previously Gazelka served one term in the House and one two-year term in the Senate.

Gazelka said he won all four counties and half of them were new counties for him. He moved into the district earlier this year after redistricting. The Baxter insurance agent said he moved 20 miles from his previous home. An assistant majority leader during the last session, he said he would like to serve in a leadership role on the minority side in the Senate this session.

“I’m glad that I built respect and bridges among the Democratic Party,” he said.

Doty could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
