History will be made Monday when Cheryl Gelbmann and Barb Uppgaard join commissioner Mary Koep to constitute - at least in sheer numbers - Minnesota's first female majority on a county board.

A former city councilman and a Brainerd business woman applied Wednesday for a Brainerd City Council vacancy. Frank Murray and Dawn Brodmarkle joined five other applicants to fill the seat vacated by Mary Koep, recently elected to the county board.

"A baby a month is something, isn't it," quipped Jeanne Endres, mother of Crow Wing County's first baby of the year, Jeffrey Stephen. Jeanne and husband Dick Endres also adopted a one-year-old Korean girl in December. They live on Gilbert Lake.

Jack Mehaffey, son of the Scott Mehaffeys, Brainerd, is in St. Joseph's hospital with a broken leg suffered in a skiing mishap. The accident occurred near the bottom of the hill when he tried to avoid a fallen skier. He was towed to the road on a toboggan.

A festive party of 19 young Brainerd boys and girls, who used a cottage on North Long Lake for an after-New Year's dance gathering, was broken up when the owner walked in. Finding 300 broken phonograph records, he called Sheriff Claus Theorin to intervene.
100 years ago (1911)
Inquiry among confectioners and candy merchants of the city shows increasing sales of candy, and bears out the medical statement that candy is a whiskey cure. Of course, all the increased business cannot be traced to the recent dry manifesto by the Indian agent.
