20 years ago (1991)

(Photo) Jeremy Neyens, a fifth-grade student at Riverside Elementary School, gets a boost from his classmates this morning to put yellow ribbons in a tree in support of servicemen and women serving in the Persian Gulf.

30 years ago (1981)

Visiting St. Cloud Apollo, capitalizing on some of Brainerd's missed short jump shots and four straight one-and-ones at the gift lane, nearly wiped out a 12-point Warrior lead. But the Warriors prevailed 75-61 in a contest in which 56 total fouls were called.

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) Joey Kretzman, Brainerd's veteran featherweight Golden Gloves boxer, was named winner of the Louie Hansen award at Saturday night's bout. Presenting are coaches John Sundby, Tom and Jim Herron, Clay Eisel and Les Sellnow.

60 years ago (1951)

(Photo) Looking over the scroll of contributors to the National Guard company fund is Lt. Bob Olson, commander. Looking on is Brig. Gen. Henry Mills, chair of the Armed Services committee, which raised $1,500 to aid the deploying servicemen.

80 years ago (1931)

Richard Ahrens of Minneapolis, formerly of Brainerd, died today at the N.P. Hospital in Minneapolis. Ahrens lived here for many years and, with his brother, owned what is now known as Ahrens Hill. He was well known by all the old-timers here.

100 years ago (1911)

The Brainerd Ice Co. is ready for its annual ice harvest from Rice Lake. Some 5,000 tons will be cut and stored in ice houses on the south shore. The ice is in excellent condition — no slush and 22 inches thick. It is declared pure by the state board of health.

I then transfered up to Bemidji State University in, you guessed it, Bemidji, MN. In the spring of 2009, I graduated from BSU.
