Brainerd's Fourth of July celebration this year will be dedicated to the men and women of Operation Desert Storm. Cheri Seils of Brainerd Community Action said that area veterans of the Middle East conflict who can be present will be parade marshals.

Brainerd 112-pounder Pat Whelan is one of four area wrestlers to gain tonight's semifinals in the State Wrestling Tournament at St. Paul. “He looked tough,” said coach Bruce Thompson. “He looked polished, he's ready.”
40 years ago (1971)
The Brainerd Warriors, shooting for their 15th win in 18 games, closed out their regular season in front of the home fans with a 61-57 win over South St. Paul. Brainerd was cool from the field but shot 21 of 25 from the free throw line to carry the win.
60 years ago (1951)
The Brainerd Drama League will meet at the home of Mrs. Walter Wieland on Fir Street. A variety program will be presented, featuring the poetry of Emily Dickinson read by Mrs. Wayne Fezler. There will be two musical selections sung by Mrs. Lee Folsom.

Enthusiasts of better roads, and citizens who realize good roads are important to progress in the lakes region, will herald action of the county board to extend two major county roads with $29,000 in tarvia and oiling. Tourism interests petitioned for the work.

Residents of the First Ward, as well as other parts of the city, are complaining about the lakes and uncharted seas visible in their streets and wish something could be done to drain away the water. In some spots ferry boats could be used to advantage.
