Unemployment in Crow Wing County rose by a full point from December to January, from 7.2 percent to 8.2 percent. The rate a year ago was 8.1 percent. For Crow Wing, Cass, Todd, Morrison and Wadena counties the combined rate is now at 9.9 percent.

(Photo) Pat Whelan became Brainerd's first state wrestling champion since 1965 when he beat Austin's Todd Guse 3-2 in the 112-pound finals. Guse had been riding an 84-match winning streak before Whelan stopped him to cap a 30-1 record this season for Brainerd.

A herd of seven deer appeared to be in good condition and well fattened, according to Brainerd Police Captain Bob Titus. He and Bill Todd were flying just north of Brainerd when they spotted the deer, which didn't seem to be too concerned with the plane.

Brainerd ten pin teams triumphed over opposition from St. Cloud on Sunday afternoon at Van's Alleys. Van's Café beat their opponent two of three games led by Eide rolling a 652 and Van Essen a 601. Brainerd's E.M.B.A. also took two of three in their contest.

Alderman Pete Cardle, of the Fifth Ward, is proud of his latest purchase, a full-blooded Rhode Island Red rooster from the pens of Grand View Farm, St. Paul. The bird was on display at the Cochran-Hess barber shop, stalking around and displaying his plumage.
