(Photo) Randy Tomberlin, owner of North Star Hunting Preserve south of Brainerd, has raised feral (Russian) hogs the past three years without incident. Yet some groups fear they could spread disease or damage the environment if they are able to escape.

(Photo) Howard White presents Dr. John Weaver, chair of the Brainerd Community College Foundation, with a plaque bearing the likeness of Dick Ungerecht, who was killed in Vietnam. A scholarship in his memory honors all Vietnam veterans.

40 years ago (1971)

A hearing will be held before the Minnesota Municipal Commission April 29 on a petition seeking to turn the west half of Unorganized Territory into a village called Ojibway. The petition follows bitter disputes over a campground near Donnybrooke.

60 years ago (1951)

The men who fell on Bataan will not be forgotten by the 194th Tank Battalion, though the Guard unit is currently at Camp Rucker, Ala., preparing for possible deployment to Korea. LtCol Carl Erickson, commander, said remembrance ceremonies will be held.

80 years ago (1931)

Physicians watched closely over 3-year-old Donald Stone to safeguard him from pneumonia, after he had been rescued from the Mississippi River. Brothers Clyde and Ray Brandow pulled him out after he had slipped into the water while playing.

100 years ago (1911)

Last evening witnessed the opening of the new Iron Exchange Hotel on Laurel Street. Its proprietor is Nicholas Lauer, well known hotel and restaurant man, who operated the Horse Shoe restaurant at that site. Its 45 rooms are priced at 50-cents, 75-cents and $1.00.
