Retired Brainerd City Clerk Dick Johnson has been named Elk of the Year by the Minnesota Elks Association at their convention in Willmar. It came as a surprise to the 31-year lodge member. “I had no idea I was under consideration,” said Johnson.

Approval of plans for a county landfill between Brainerd and Crosby was given by the county commissioners. The site will use 400 acres of tax forfeited land, with 20 acres being developed first. It will serve all of Crow Wing County except the northwest corner.

Brainerd's Braves came through with one of their top offensive outputs of the season, pounding out 15 hits, including a homer, two triples and four doubles to crush the highly regarded St. Paul Kronicks 13-4. Pitcher Herb Score coasted through seven innings.

There is still another bit of good news relative to iron ore near the city, in fact within the city limits. The Duluth Drilling Co. is at work drilling holes in blocks 7 through 12 near 13th Street. They also have two drills working on the Rosko farm, south on 13th Street.
