Marv Koep of Nisswa Bait and Lucy Nesheim of Nesheim Bait both admit they're not surprised that the Crappiethon USA tournament won't be back in Brainerd next year. But Jim Boberg of Lake Hubert recently caught a 1-13 crappie that won him a $1,000 check.

Dr. Clark Zard has joined the dental practice of Dr. Robert Kaspar in the Arcadia Building here. A native of Rochester, Dr. Zard is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota Dental School.

The young ones came and waited, and waited, but nothing happened. Thanks to beefed-up security and timely rain, there was no repeat of the invasion of Nisswa that occurred on Memorial Day. Arrests were swift and fines were heavy, dispensed by Jack Anderson.

Lefty Herb Score twirled a five-hitter and struck out 19, as the Brainerd Braves stopped Pierz 4-3. In the second game, Gordie Coleman had three hits and speedy Marv Bollig scored from second on a base hit by Dick Cook to beat St. Cloud by 9-8.

The Fourth of July weekend cost two Minneapolis youth more than they had budgeted. Leaving a cabin they had rented on East Twin Lake, they took two blankets with them. The owner called the sheriff, who stopped them, charging them $12.48 for the theft.
100 years ago (1911)
Eight men were charged in police court for being intoxicated over the holiday. They were out-of-town guests from up river. Half of them paid a $10 fine; the other half took ten days in the cooler from the excessive heat to forget their thirst.
