It was more than just a fair Friday. Phyllis Henze, manager of the Crow Wing County Fair, said it was the biggest day ever at the fair, which ended Saturday. She based this on receipts for the demolition derby, which with 45 cars, was the biggest in history.

30 years ago (1981)

Pilots have a saying about landings: Any one that you walk away from is a good one. Mike Landecker of rural Pequot Lakes learned the truth of that, but with one twist. He swam away when his plane flipped on landing at Pelican Lake, turned by a wind gust.

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) Smiling happily here is Debra Elaine Nay after being crowned Miss Brainerd 1971 last night at the Brainerd Junior College. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Stohr of Nisswa, she also won trophies for evening gown and talent categories.

60 years ago (1951)

Yesterday's story of the car lost while blueberry picking gets stranger. Police Chief Templeton returned to pick berries in the same location and found his friend’s car, not stolen but parked and locked, a full five blocks from where they left it. A mystery.

80 years ago (1931)

R. J. Koenig, mechanic of Brunswick Balk Co., has just finished the sanding and refinishing of alleys and runways at Van's Alleys in the Elks Building. League bowling will start September 14, and this year there will be two leagues for women, also.

100 years ago (1911)

The game with Sauk Rapids for next Sunday has been cancelled, and Foley has been substituted. Foley has a good, fast team and their demands are reasonable. Sauk Rapids wanted $110 guaranteed and 60 percent of the gate money. Brainerd would not agree.
