20 years ago (1991)

Driver Dick Trickle and his crew chief, Russ Ebert of Brainerd, gambled and won the Minnesota State Fair stock car race Monday. Trickle celebrated his 4th state fair victory by giving the trophy to Ebert, who started work today at Brainerd Technical College.

30 years ago (1981)

Bond bids at a net interest rate of 11.4 percent were accepted by the Baxter City Council for the Southdale water project and the sewer interceptor project. At that interest rate, the net cost on the $820,000 water project will be $93,480.

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) Eunice Vesgaard was crowned the Centennial Belle last night at the Brainerd Armory during the Grand Ball. She sold more than 1,000 Centennial Buttons to win the honor. 1st runner-up is Betty Alderman; 2nd runner-up is Ella Simmons.

60 years ago (1951)

Brainerd's big Labor Day parade proved a huge success as the weatherman gave us a perfect day and thousands lined the length of the parade route. There were 35 units, including bands, drum and bugle corps, floats and marching units.                                            

80 years ago (1931)

Another getaway by bandits was chalked up today in Crow Wing County when authorities could find no trace of the two unmasked men who robbed the Deerwood Meat & Grocery Store. They entered at closing time, flashed guns and made off with $170.

100 years ago (1911)

On September 10th Brainerd's merchants and the clerks will have a baseball game at the Koering grounds to decide decisively the previous game held at the Merrifield picnic. That game ended in a 9-9 tie when Mayor Dunn, umpire, called the game because of rain.
