Sandy Smith of Brainerd scored the winning goal and added two assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Team USA 5-2. Smith, a fifth-round draft choice of the Penguins out of UMD, was chosen the game's No.1 star.

With “shirt sleeves rolled up and red pencils in hand,” Crow Wing County commissioners looked to cut costs to stay within a 6 percent levy increase for the 1982 budget. The county is allowed an 8 percent increase, but dept. heads were told to cut further.

Further plans to build a bridge that would link the Brainerd Vo-Tech School and Brainerd Junior College campuses were discussed by the city council. The council directed city engineer Dave Reed to complete cost estimates for the project for further study.

A mysterious explosion was heard by residents in the vicinity of Mary and Jenkins Streets and four blocks away last night at 8 p.m. One resident said, “It was as loud as a large bomb.” Police found shattered pieces of cardboard and paper in the middle of the street.

The Rochester Cubs today eliminated the Brainerd City League champions in the first round of the State Amateur Baseball Tournament in St. Paul by 7-1. Brainerd's Jarbo struck out 7 but gave up 10 hits. Tripper struck out 6, gave up 4 walks and hit Nutting twice.

The second week of football finds a large squad out for the high school team. The work so far has consisted of the usual early season stunts, such as falling on the ball, kicking, tackling, etc. Capt. Mahlum is back at fullback and Alderman holds down left half.
