Three former Brainerd cross country skiers have been selected to try out for the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. Participating in the tryouts at Giants Ridge will be Christa Brown, Brad Nelson and Tim Nelson, based on their 1991 season results.

30 years ago (1981)

It wasn't a usual Friday this morning at Pine River schools, as activity centered around groups of teachers picketing at each of the school entrances. Unable to reach agreement in a final three-hour negotiation session last night, teachers went on strike at 7 a.m.

40 years ago (1971)

Willis Haugene, Brainerd, discovered in an unusual way that his pickup had been stolen - he met it on Oak Street. He was driving into town in another vehicle when he saw it, and found it was stolen when he got to the Fleet Store parking lot, where he'd parked it.

60 years ago (1951)

Installation of officers for Scarab Circle No. 6, Military Order of Lady Bugs, and Lakeland Pup Tent Military Order of Cooties, will be held Nov. 14 at the VFW hall. Installing will be Grand Seam Squirrel Tom Caswell and Majestic Gold Bug Lucille Yeager.

80 years ago (1931)

The curtain was rung down on Brainerd football for another season, with the finest exhibition of football on the local field in several years. The 12-7 victory over C-I — its first in five years — was achieved by perfection of an aerial attack. 2,500 fans watched.

100 years ago (1911)

The gymnasium classes and basketball team will commence work at Ridley's gymnasium this evening. Much interest is being shown in the work outlined for the winter season.
