Fifty-two percent field goal shooting and dominant rebounding – 38 to 14 – took the Warriors to an 81-57 season opening victory over Bemidji. Center Kyle Smith led the parade with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Al Stier and DJ Theisen each had 11 points.

St. Joseph’s Hospital, a part of Brainerd since 1901, announced yesterday the eighth major construction project in its 80-year history. James Koerper, administrator, said the $15 million project is needed as both population and number of physicians have grown.

Four incumbent councilmen, including Marv Rau, at-large; Mary Koep, 1st Ward; Merle Storm, 2nd Ward; and Tom Anderson, 3rd Ward, were re-elected to the council in Tuesday’s vote. Newcomer Gene Goedker was elected an alderman-at-large.

A last gasp spurt in the final two minutes of play wasn’t enough for the Warriors as they went down to their first setback of the season, 43-39 to St. Cloud Tech. Scoring was a two-man show, with Bill Selisker counting 18 and Jim DeRosier adding 11.

Jack Dempsey, former world’s heavyweight champ, worked out at Breezy Point yesterday doing six miles of roadwork. His private dinner last night at Capt. Billy Fawcett’s palatial home had several Brainerd guests, including Henry and Stewart Mills.
