Ask any coach and most will say that polls aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. The Little Falls boys’ basketball team proved that with a stunning 49-48 overtime win over the 10th-ranked Warriors. It was Brainerd’s first loss of the season.

30 years ago (1981)

(Photo) Edie Derocher, who started bowling in 1932 at a 4-lane bowling alley, was honored by the Kohoutek Women’s Bowling League at a Vilo Lanes coffee party for having participated in the sport for 50 years.

40 years ago (1971)

The last word personal word his family has had from Maj. Glendon Perkins was a couple of lines on a Christmas card last January that he was in good health. The son of the Ed Perkins of Crosslake, Maj. Perkins was shot down and captured in North Vietnam in 1966.

60 years ago (1951)

Added Christmas joy came to over 3,000 families as the Chinese Communists released the names of U. S. prisoners of war held in Korea. One is Cpl. Herbert Floyd, 22, son of the Hiram Floyds of Brainerd. He has been missing in action since a battle on May 18th.

80 years ago (1931)

A Crow Wing County farmer will receive a year and a day in Leavenworth federal prison for having a still and manufacturing moonshine whiskey. The farmer was sentenced by federal district court in Duluth.

100 years ago (1911)

William Flansburg of St. Mathias lost four fingers of his left hand while running a corn shredder at the home of a neighbor. He is the uncle of Mrs. Reid, wife of Sheriff Reid. Through skillful surgery his thumb was saved. He is recovering at St. Joseph’s hospital.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
