The problem: How to get a bunch of students and faculty members excited about a food drive. The answer: Make it a competition. Little Falls high school won the “Food Bowl” against Brainerd, but the food shelf was a real winner as 4.5 tons of food was collected.

30 years ago (1981)

(Photo) Brainerd diver Bill Matthies entered the icy waters of Mille Lacs Lake last night to search for a man whose snowmobile plunged through a crack in the ice. He recovered the man’s body in 13-feet of water. The man’s wife died at Onamia hospital.

40 years ago (1971)

(Photos) Gerald Wagner, Brainerd, landed this 9-14 walleye on Gull Lake using a Swedish Pimple. This 16-6 northern was caught on a sucker minnow on North Long Lake by Pat Kakhoe of Little Falls. Both were weighed in at Sportland of Nisswa.

60 years ago (1951)

The annual Christmas party for the 50 school children of Baxter and teacher, Mrs. Russell Johnson, was held at Cave’s Restaurant on S. 6th. Hosts were two-year-old “Butchie” Cave and his folks, Art and Tillie Cave. Turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served.

80 years ago (1931)

Residents of the community rallied to the appeal of the Dispatch for the adoption of the needs of 13 needy county families for Christmas. Lottie Odell of the county welfare board, who is cooperating with the Dispatch, said eighrt families have already been adopted.

100 years ago (1911)

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
