20 years ago (1991)

In recent years, national and state studies suggest public workers are doing better than those in private business. Now a local study by the Dispatch suggests the same is true here. Some of the discrepancy stems from the fact that many public workers are in unions.

30 years ago (1981)

The city council approved a license yesterday for Rapid Taxi Co., after telling the firm and its competitor, Brainerd Taxi, to “work together” to end a long-standing feud. Both companies traded charges of physical abuse, slashed tires and engine sabotage.

40 years ago (1971)

Some clutch free throw shooting in the closing minutes (9 of 11) helped the Warriors win their Paul Bunyan Holiday Tournament for the first time, recording a 56-51 win over the scrappy Cloquet Lumberjacks. Coach Corky Johnson’s team improves to 6 and 1.

60 years ago (1951)

Louis Rofidal will assume his duties as Brainerd’s new chief of police on Monday. Currently senior patrolman on the force, Rofidal, a Brainerd native, joined the force in 1939. He has served continuously, except for a 20-month tour with the Army in WWII.

80 years ago (1931)

Machine gun raiders spread terror to seven residents of Pine River, forcing them from their beds early today, held them under threat of death and robbed their homes and two stores. The gang of six sped away, eluding a cordon of law officers from four counties.

100 years ago (1911)

Roy Carlson, son of the C.E. Carlsons, who has been at St. Joseph’s hospital for three weeks with a broken leg, has returned home. He is recovering nicely after receiving his injury while at play on the Harrison School grounds.
