20 years ago (1992)

Brainerd High School sophomore Elizabeth Peters was crowned Miss Minnesota Teen USA at a pageant in Bloomington. The 16-year-old Lake Hubert resident will be accompanied by her mother, Jane Peters, traveling to the national pageant in Biloxi, Miss.

30 years ago (1982)

(Photo) This 15-pound walleye took out 75 yards of line before Pat Mulroy of Apple Valley was able to land it at Gull Lake. Fishing in 25 feet of water, it was 20 minutes before he landed it. It is the largest walleye caught in the area in many years.

40 years ago (1972)

A book detailing his life in an Albanian prison camp, and ultimately his escape and journey to the United States, has been completed by Abas (Charlie) Korchari and is now on sale. Korchari found his way to Brainerd, where he operates Charlie’s Restaurant.

60 years ago (1952)

80 years ago (1932)

Olney Edwards, Civil War veteran, is celebrating his 84th birthday quietly at his West Brainerd home. He is in perfect health and has lived here 43 years. He was consigned to Encampment D and served one year, fighting in battles at Spanish Fort and Blakly, Ala.

100 years ago (1912)

This morning was the coldest of the season. Official records are kept at the Gull Lake dam by George Snetsinger. Figures for the past six days are: Jan. 1 – 21 below; Jan. 2 – 21 below; Jan. 3 – 27 below; Jan. 4 – 30 below; Jan. 5 – 35 below; Jan. 6 – 37 below.
