Crow Wing County edged just above the national unemployment rate for December, reaching 7.3 percent. The national rate is 7.1%. Other area counties: Morrison 11.6 percent, Cass 11.3 percent, Aitkin 11.6 percent, Todd 8.8 percent and Wadena 9.0.


30 years ago (1982)

A task force studying the operation of Brainerd International Raceway turned in its report making 52 recommendations on handling noise, traffic, security and camping at BIR. The report capped a series of meetings when the county board formed the task force.

40 years ago (1972)

Down 18-16 after four events, the Warrior swimmers rallied for a 53-42 triumph here against St. Cloud Apollo on Parents Night. It took 3 school records to do it: Kevin Wahlberg in the 200 free, Bill Kisskeys in diving and Tim Vrudny, 100 backstroke.

60 years ago (1952)

The Brainerd City Council adopted the proposed fluoridation project at their regular meeting last night. A committee reported they had met with the water and light board and there were no objections to fluoridation. Tooth decay in children should be reduced 65 percent.

80 years ago (1932)

“Strangler Buck” Schiel, proprietor of the Gull Lake Grocery, issued a challenge to all comers in the lake region to a wrestling match. Schiel, 30, claims to have appeared in matches across the country and to have beaten some of the topnotchers.

100 years ago (1912)

The McPhail concert of vocals, violin and piano to be given Thursday at Elks Hall is a rare treat for music lovers. The concert is under the auspices of the Brainerd Musical Club. The artists giving the recital stand at the head of Minneapolis music circles.
