20 years ago (1992)

The Brainerd R/UDAT Committee has been reorganized, renamed and incorporated to carry out recommendations of the three-year-old report. Bob Verkennes of First American Bank will lead the newly formed board of directors.

30 years ago (1982)

The Crow Wing County Board put itself on a collision course with the DNR, voting to deny that body’s request for permits to build a controversial public access on Round Lake. The access has aroused heated opposition from the lake’s property owners.

40 years ago (1972)

A stubborn gate in the paper mill dam on the Mississippi River threatened to create dangerous conditions on Rice Lake. The gate, which is used to regulate water levels, stuck open for awhile, dropping the water by five inches before being fixed.

60 years ago (1952)

Showing the effects of broken-up practice sessions last week due to illness of several regulars, the Brainerd JC Red Raiders had exceedingly rough going in scoring a second victory over Ely, 54-51. Brainerd now stands at 6-6 on the season.

80 years ago (1932)

Fresh from their victory over the famous Harlem Globe Trotters, the Brainerd Merchants basketball team will take on two strong squads in a double-header at the high school gym. Featured are a fast squad from Detroit Lakes and the Serve-U-Well team from St. Cloud.

100 years ago (1912)

There was a weighty gathering at A. K. Lukens Red Front grocery store the other day when a party of four ladies, buying groceries there, had themselves weighed. Their respective weights were 235, 242, 250 and 275 pounds, totaling 1,002 pounds.
