20 years ago (1992)

The Potlatch Foundation awarded a donation of $8,000 to the Paul Bunyan Arboretum, accepted by director Dick Beal, Kim Klein and Wayne Damerow. A check for $25,000 was given to the Salvation Army as part of a $50,000 gift to its building campaign.


30 years ago (1982)

The Brainerd Kixters took second place in Class AAA at the Minnesota Assn. of Dancelines eighth annual competition at St. Cloud. Burnsville was first and Apple Valley third. Kixter adviser is Cindy Clough, president of the state danceline association.

40 years ago (1972)

(Photo) Ray Shortridge, Brainerd fire chief and Golden Glove boxing referee, is shown breaking up a clinch at the Upper Midwest tournament. Shortridge officiated during the quarter and semi-finals. The tourney is conducted under Olympic boxing rules.

60 years ago (1952)

The American Legion battered winless Burton’s 47-22 in YMCA City Basketball league action. Chuck Warnberg paced the Legionnaires with 13 counters. The YMCA team gained a fourth place tie with Madison’s Sporting Goods, beating them 43-34.

80 years ago (1932)

The Hickerson Garment Factory, employing 50 people, resumed operations at full capacity today after a partial shutdown the last six weeks. S.R. Hickerson said that a recent selling trip back east brought in sufficient orders to last the rest of the year.

100 years ago (1912)

At Merrifield today, young Ludlow, age 14, threw a burning match into an empty gasoline tank. There was a sharp explosion and the tank, weighing 100 pounds, shot 75 feet into the air, coming down on the train depot roof and smashed the timbers.
