At the turn of the new year, Jack Ruttger turned over operations of Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge & Conference Center to his son Chris. Chris is a great-grandson of founders Joe and Josephine Ruttger, and is the fourth generation of his family to operate the lodge.

30 years ago (1982)

Sorry ladies! We hate to dash your hopes, but Paul Newman hasn’t bought a home on Gull Lake. That doesn’t mean that Old Blue Eyes may not be looking for one. But for now the rumors flying around are just rumors, fueled by his regular visits to BIR.

Carl E. Martinson, a member of the Water & Light board for 26 years, has declined another term. Mayor George Bedard appointed William Klein, local freight agent for BN Railroad, to replace him, and the council approved him last night.

Brainerd’s Red Devils hockey team lost their first game of the season 4-1 to C-I on the Brainerd rink, with Hegstad scoring the lone Brainerd goal. Coming after Brainerd’s 6-0 win over Staples the previous day, this brings the Red Devils record to 8-1.

100 years ago (1912)

Policeman J.P. Barney, on the night force in the business district, was beaten up by a gang on S. 5th and Laurel Streets last night. Police Chief Ridley said warrants will be issued for those charged guilty by the officer. Alderman Purdy heard the row and helped quell it.
