John Ward, a Franklin Junior High School special education teacher who is himself handicapped, was named Brainerd teacher of the year. Duane Blanck, Crow Wing County Highway Engineer, has been named national Rural Engineer of the Year.

In its deepest – and toughest – budget cutting proposal to date, the Brainerd School Board reviewed recommendations to close up to three of the district’s 11 elementary schools, cut 34 staff members and hone extra-curricular budgets to meet a projected budget deficit.

Forced into OT by the Lumberjacks at Bemidji last night, Brainerd proved equal to the challenge for a 66-64 triumph last night. The Warriors were down 11 points with 5:45 to play, but rallied behind John Straka’s biggest night of the year with 31 points.

Harold C. Nordgaard was reelected superintendent of Brainerd public schools by the school board last night, and his salary set at $8,700. Maximum salaries for teachers with 10 years experience were set at $3,500 for a 2-year degree, and $4,525 with a master’s.

An agreement of a new wage scale for bricklayers, masons and plasterers was made today by Louis Lee, secretary of the union. It calls for $1.00 per hour, while the old scale was $1.25 per hour. The new scale is effective immediately and good throughout 1932.

Brainerd’s basketball team defeated Bemidji to the tune of 27 to 25 on their three-day road journey. They previously defeated Akeley and Walker. The score of the latter was 17 to 13, this despite playing in a small room on a slippery floor with rough tactics by Walker.
