20 years ago (1992)

The Brainerd School Board officially set a May 19 referendum and decided to ask voters just one question instead of two. The question, to be combined with school board elections, will ask for $2.2 million to add on to Garfield and renovate Tornstrom Auditorium.

30 years ago (1982)

(Photos) Wes Pernula and Joe Melby of the Brainerd Dispatch composing room have switched duties. Pernula, former assistant foreman, has become foreman. Melby relinquished the foreman’s job due to health reasons.

40 years ago (1972)

J.E. (Jack) Chalberg, head of the Brainerd Junior College for 28 years and an educator for 40 years, submitted his resignation effective June 30. It was due to health reasons. Enrollment has grown from 27 in 1944 when he started, to 620 students today.

60 years ago (1952)

The Brainerd School Board has accepted, with regret, the resignation of Miss Freda Caniff, principal of Harrison School. Miss Caniff, who was “Teacher of the Year” in 1949, has taught in Brainerd since 1910, and has taught a total of 47 years.

80 years ago (1932)

Definite instructions to NP Railroad shop officials here to resume work on 500 single sheathed box cars were received today. Seventy-five workers laid off on Feb. 5th will go back to work, increasing the number of employees to approximately 1,000.

100 years ago (1912)

Much interest is being taken by the lovers of good sport in the coming wrestling match Manager Tom Brown has arranged for Saturday at the Brainerd Opera House. It features John Anderson, welterweight champion of Finland against Harry McAlduff, the Canadian Kid.
